“Our clients worked hard all their lives, putting their trust in the companies that employed them and believing they had their best interests at heart. Now, all these years later, our clients discover that was never the case. These companies betrayed their trust; now our clients and their families are facing a devastating disease and unimaginable circumstances. It’s horrible what these companies did and they should be held accountable for their actions.”

Overview

Weitz & Luxenberg is pleased to welcome Brandon Perlman to our hardworking, knowledgeable Mesothelioma and Asbestos Litigation unit. He comes to us from a long line of family members who dedicated their lives to working on behalf of individuals harmed by the actions of others. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all attorneys.

“I’m excited Weitz & Luxenberg asked me to join its team of mesothelioma and asbestos attorneys,” Mr. Perlman exclaims. “I’ve known about the firm for years, and it’s a privilege to join their efforts.”

I’ve Always Wanted to Be an Attorney

“Ever since I was 5, I planned on becoming an attorney. Growing up, I admired how my own family members had spent their lives representing individuals who had been victims of personal injuries so I knew I wanted to help others,” Mr. Perlman remembers.

“The more I learned about mesothelioma and asbestos exposure, the more I realized that was exactly the kind of law I wanted to focus on,” he says. “Being here feels like an excellent fit for my own personal goals. I really want to help our clients who have developed this horrible, yet preventable disease.”

No One Should Have to Face Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that often forms in the lungs. Unlike some other forms of cancer, we know what causes it: asbestos exposure.

We know mesothelioma can be prevented. We know our clients did not have to face this diagnosis.

That is why Weitz & Luxenberg was founded over 30 years ago and why we continue to fight on behalf of our clients. The companies that exposed people to asbestos knew how dangerous it could be.

But those companies put profits first. Had they had warned people and safeguarded the health of their employees, our clients would not have developed this disease.

As Mr. Perlman echoes our firm’s sentiments exactly: “We need to make things right.”

Putting Profit Over People Is Wrong

“We live in a great country, which offers people the opportunity to make a good living and lead fulfilling lives. But there’s one thing that really bothers me: the culture of profit over people, which some corporations are guilty of,” he insists.

“It’s one thing to make money, but some companies care only about making money. They don’t look out for their employees. They could take measures to safeguard their employees’ health, but they don’t. For them, it’s money first,” Mr. Perlman adds.

Weitz & Luxenberg Hold Irresponsible Companies Accountable

“Some companies simply don’t care about people’s welfare. They make decisions every day to increase their profit margins and hope that they’ll get away with it, that something won’t come around to bite them in the end. That is outrageous and disgusting,” he insists.

“That’s why what we are doing at Weitz & Luxenberg is so important. The attorneys here are some of the best in the country, and we’re doing everything we can legally to make sure these companies don’t get away with harming people,” Mr. Perlman says.

People Can Still Be Exposed to Asbestos

“When we think about asbestos, what comes to mind are certain types of jobs. Like steamfitters, construction workers, boiler makers, firefighters, and mechanics. Many of our clients have worked in power plants, at construction sites, and in the building industry,” Mr. Perlman explains.

“And although asbestos has been phased out in many areas since the 1980s, we are still discovering it in all kinds of products and the dangers of being exposed still exist,” he points out.

Mesothelioma Can Take Decades to Develop

“As long as companies are knowingly exposing people to asbestos, there’s a chance people will get sick. The thing about mesothelioma is that it often takes decades to develop, so some companies will continue to do what they can to make money today and hope they never have to answer for their actions,” Mr. Perlman explains.

He emphasizes, “What these companies better realize is that as long as they keep putting people’s lives at risk, Weitz & Luxenberg will be right here fighting for the very people these companies disregarded and failed to keep safe.”

Helping People Is What We Do

“Every case begins with meeting our clients and listening to them. We want to hear their stories in their own words and help them recount details from sometimes decades ago,” Mr. Perlman continues.

“We explain the legal process and support them in every way we can. Ultimately, we want them to know we will never stop working for them. We will do everything legally possible to secure a just outcome for them and their families,” he adds.

Prior Experience in the Law

Mr. Perlman joined Weitz & Luxenberg shortly after earning his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School. While attending Brooklyn Law, Mr. Perlman served as an articles editor on the Brooklyn Law Review, as well as a national team member of the Moot Court Honor Society. Additionally, Mr. Perlman interned in several legal venues, including the Office of the New York State Attorney General.

He also served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Katherine A. Levine in Civil Court of the City of New York, Kings County, Brooklyn, New York. In that role, Mr. Perlman conducted legal research on issues arising in civil cases; analyzed the availability of special damages; and observed and assisted the judge in courtroom proceedings and pretrial conferences.

Outside the Office

Outside the office, Mr. Perlman enjoys following the New York Knicks and New York Giants. He also loves boxing. When he can get out of town, he visits his home in Vermont where he loves to ski and spend time outdoors.

Mr. Perlman is licensed to practice law in New York. He earned his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in Brooklyn, New York, and his B.S. from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.

“Doug Peralta is a client liaison at Weitz & Luxenberg. With more than 10 years of experience collaborating one-on-one with new clients, Doug is an expert at working with people to understand their concerns and goals.”

Overview

Doug represents Weitz & Luxenberg in the Southeast region, and is stationed in Nashville, Tenn.

In a typical case, Doug will call to set up an initial consultation with a new client. This meeting is an exchange of ideas, with the new client explaining his or her case, and Doug showing how Weitz & Luxenberg may be able to help.

Typically, Doug can help new clients research the sources of their asbestos exposure, understand some of the legal facts associated with their condition, and initiate a case with Weitz & Luxenberg. Many clients have questions about how these complex lawsuits work and what unique resources Weitz & Luxenberg can offer in the way of legal services — Doug will walk prospective clients through these issues to their satisfaction.

CHERRY HILL OFFICE

“To my knowledge, no other asbestos exposure and mesothelioma law firm fights as hard as Weitz & Luxenberg to see that its clients get the justice they deserve. That’s because no law firm cares as deeply about its clients as Weitz & Luxenberg.”

Overview

Michelle C. Murtha brings a special intensity to her role as a Weitz & Luxenberg advocate for the legal rights of the victims of corporate greed. What drives her is a belief that corporations should not escape liability for exposing innocent people to asbestos and causing them to develop mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer. Ms. Murtha — who is licensed to practice law in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey — joined Weitz & Luxenberg in 2014. She started as a legal fellow and in 2015 advanced to associate attorney.

Previously, Ms. Murtha served as a law clerk to the Hon. Madelin F. Einbinder, a judge in the Family Division of Ocean County Superior Court, Toms River, New Jersey. In that capacity, Ms. Murtha often made recommendations to the judge with regard to dispositions and motions. Ms. Murtha also aided the judge in reaching tentative decisions and in other vital matters. Before that, Ms. Murtha was a legal intern in the mass tort department of Woodbridge, New Jersey, law firm Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer.

That internship coincided with the final year of her education at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Upon graduation in 2013, Ms. Murtha received a juris doctor degree (concentration in litigation) and recognition for high academic performance (Dean’s List honors, the Thomas M. Cooley Leadership Award, and the Book Award in Children and the Law).

While attending the school, Ms. Murtha also served as the Ann Arbor chapter treasurer and public relations director of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan. As well, she acted as master of ceremonies at events conducted by the Delta Theta Phi law fraternity, and gained invaluable experience in oral argumentation by participating in the IntraSchool Moot Court competition.

Ms. Murtha holds a master of governmental administration degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Fels Institute of Government. She received it in 2007. In 2005, she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from Douglass College of Rutgers University. There, she attained Dean’s List recognition for her outstanding grades. She also was inducted into national political science honor society Pi Sigma Alpha and national history honor society Phi Alpha Theta.

Laura Covey Laszewski

ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY

“There are companies run by people willing to hurt other people. In the case of asbestos, some companies knowingly exposed people to this deadly carcinogen. That’s horrible. They could have implemented safeguards so our clients were not exposed to asbestos and did not develop mesothelioma, a devastating cancer. My colleagues and I want to make sure those responsible are held accountable. They need to own up to what they’ve done and provide compensation to our clients for the injuries suffered.”

Overview

Laura Covey Laszewski has joined Weitz & Luxenberg’s knowledgeable and committed Mesothelioma and Asbestos Practice Group litigation unit in the firm’s New Jersey office. Like her colleagues, Ms. Laszewski cares deeply about the individual clients she helps.

Drawn by the Sense of Commitment

“That was one of the things that drew me to Weitz & Luxenberg,” Ms. Laszewski says. “Everyone here is really client focused. More than anything, we want to help individual people and their families.

“Particularly in the case of asbestos and mesothelioma, the relationships we develop with our clients are the center of what we do. Clients are putting their lives in our hands, and we have to do everything we can legally to bring about a fair resolution.

“Our clients are living with mesothelioma, which is a horribly aggressive form of cancer,” Ms. Laszewski explains. “This disease is directly linked to asbestos exposure.

“I’ve seen firsthand what cancer can do, and I can relate to clients who are experiencing severe diseases such as mesothelioma. Although we cannot undo the damage the asbestos has caused, I hope we can ultimately help our clients and their families move forward.”

The Terrible Truth About Asbestos

Asbestos is a carcinogen. Asbestos causes cancer. No matter how you look at it, asbestos is deadly.

What makes asbestos so horrible, though, is that it’s sneaky. You could be exposed to asbestos today and not develop mesothelioma for 30 years or more.

As Ms. Laszewski stresses, “Manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors who exposed people to asbestos counted on that. They knew asbestos would make people sick. They just didn’t care.”

Asbestos Damages the Lungs

“Asbestos fibers accumulate in the lungs without causing immediate and noticeable symptoms. The damage occurs slowly,” points out Ms. Laszewski.

Scarring can occur. Healthy lung tissue can die.

Victims cannot see asbestos diseases coming.

By the time people are diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos diseases, no one can undo the damage. These diseases ravage the body. Mesothelioma is always devastating. There is no cure.

Weitz & Luxenberg Founded to Help People with Mesothelioma

More than 30 years ago, Weitz & Luxenberg was founded specifically to help people who had developed mesothelioma. We were appalled that some companies had grievously harmed so many hard-working Americans and their families.

Instead of owning up to their actions, these companies tried to finagle their way out of acknowledging the damage their actions caused, and, sadly, some companies are still blaming others.

At Weitz & Luxenberg, we believe our clients deserve to be treated fairly and honorably. As Ms. Laszewski insists, “Justice matters.

“I came to work for Weitz & Luxenberg because the firm has dedicated itself to helping people.

“Everyone deserves a voice. We want our clients to know we are doing the best we can for them. They can count on us to do what’s right and in their best interest.”

Getting Settlements for Our Clients

“Although I have experience in a courtroom and enjoy that part of the legal process, the best possible outcome is a settlement,” Ms. Laszewski says. “Settlement means our clients can be compensated sooner than if we needed to take the case to trial.

“Negotiation skills are critical. I have worked with opposing counsel in my previous position and believe this experience serves my clients well at Weitz & Luxenberg. We definitely want the defendants in these asbestos exposure cases to see the benefit of avoiding a long, expensive legal process.

“At the end of the day, it feels extremely satisfying and rewarding to have things go your way. Even better is knowing that the hard work we have done helps our clients and their families move forward,” Ms. Laszewski says.

Prior Experience Representing Clients

Before joining Weitz & Luxenberg, Ms. Laszewski worked at a law firm in Pennsylvania. From August 2011 until she joined Weitz & Luxenberg, she represented clients in court and in jury trials. She also represented minors in juvenile court.

In addition, Ms. Laszewski negotiated pleas on behalf of clients in both misdemeanor and felony cases. To perform her responsibilities successfully, she strove to maintain an excellent professional relationship with judges, court personnel, district attorneys, and opposing counsel.

One of the most meaningful parts of her job is meeting with clients, she stresses.  She engages in client intake appointments and follows up with clients throughout their cases from start to completion. She believes these experiences serve her well at Weitz & Luxenberg.

Ms. Laszewski said her passions outside of work include traveling, both internationally and nationally, and watching sports. She particularly enjoys watching Yankees baseball games and Penn State football games.

Ms. Laszewski was named a Main Line Today Top Lawyer – Criminal Law in 2017 and was recognized as a National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys Top 10 Under 40 for 2016-2017. She was also named a National Trial Lawyers Top 40 Under 40 – Criminal Defense attorney in 2016.

In addition, she is noted for serving as an NBC10 legal correspondent since 2015.

Ms. Laszewski is licensed to practice law in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

She earned her J.D. from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and her B.A. from the University of Albany in Albany, New York.
