“The most satisfying aspect of my work as an asbestos attorney is helping families. For the most part, these families are blue collar. I come from a blue-collar family — my father, grandfathers, uncles, and cousins, all of them had blue-collar jobs. I know that these men work extremely hard to support their families. It distresses me that the manufacturers of the products, equipment and materials didn’t take the time to warn these men of the dangers of asbestos. I understand that filing a lawsuit can be a stressful experience and I do my best to make sure my clients feel as comfortable as possible. I treat every client the way I would want my dad or grandfather to be treated.”

Overview

Ambre Brandis serves as an associate attorney in the Weitz & Luxenberg Asbestos Litigation group, a position she has held since being welcomed to the firm in 2007. In addition to her role at Weitz & Luxenberg, Ms. Brandis (through the auspices of local nonprofit organizations) also performs pro-bono legal work on behalf of indigent elderly who need help with estate planning and on behalf of cancer patients who require help with issues involving their employers. Prior to starting at Weitz & Luxenberg, Ms. Brandis was a legal and regulatory consultant for several global banks, drawing in part on skills acquired as a compliance officer for RBC and, earlier, as a compliance analyst for the investment brokerage firm Bear Stearns.

Ms. Brandis began the practice of law in 2006 upon admission to the bar of the State of New York. That same year she received a juris doctor degree from the University of New Hampshire (formerly Pierce) School of Law. Ms. Brandis worked her way through law school (and through college and graduate school) at a Pennsylvania law firm that handled cases involving asbestos exposure. Ms. Brandis obtained a master’s degree in writing from Rowan University (2005) and a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, in psychology from Rutgers University (2001).

Chris Branyik is a client liaison with Weitz & Luxenberg. A veteran with a decade’s experience communicating with clients and their families, Chris’ primary duty is to meet with a new client at the outset of his or her case to discuss concerns and goals.

Overview

Chris works principally with men and women who have been exposed to asbestos and need help with filing a lawsuit or receiving advice about their situation.

Finally, Chris will share the details of Weitz and Luxenberg’s proud client track record and unique resources in legal services.

If, after working with Chris, the client is interested in working with Weitz & Luxenberg, Chris will work to match the new client with the attorney best suited to handle his or her case.

Chris has extensive experience working directly with clients and their families, having worked as a client liaison for 25 years in several different industries before joining Weitz & Luxenberg.

TRIAL ATTORNEY

LOS ANGELES OFFICE
1880 Century Park East, Suite 700

“What matters most to me about my work is the opportunity to represent real people with real problems, people whose lives have been devastated by corporate greed and misconduct.”

Biography

Mark D. Bratt brings to his work at Weitz & Luxenberg the kind of zeal and compassion clients expect from an advocate-litigator focused on obtaining justice for the victims of mesothelioma and asbestos-related cancer. He currently serves as the lead trial attorney in our Los Angeles office.

Prior to joining our California office in 2015, Mr. Bratt served as asbestos-practice managing attorney for The Lanier Law Firm in Los Angeles. His role there included serving as a first-chair trial attorney and lead-negotiator of settlements. In total, his efforts there and, earlier, at the El Segundo, California, law firm of Waters, Kraus & Paul resulted in significant recovery for his clients.

Here at Weitz & Luxenberg, Mr. Bratt’s practice of law focuses on trial work and strategic workup of cases. He is particularly adept at uncovering unique exposures to asbestos, preparing clients for deposition, obtaining valuable but often difficult-to-develop evidence, aggressively cross-examining corporate witnesses, and presenting the strongest expert witnesses for trial.

Clients with whom he works hail from diverse backgrounds, chiefly U.S. Navy veterans, shipyard workers, underground water and sewer pipe installers, maintenance workers in industrial power plants, longshoremen and marine dock clerks, smokers of asbestos-filtered cigarettes, lifetime users of cosmetic talcum powder contaminated with asbestos, persons working with asbestos-laced building products and automotive parts, and family members of people working directly with asbestos products.

The Vancouver, Washington, native began the practice of law in 2006 after obtaining a law degree from Pepperdine University, where he achieved high grades and served on the school’s law review. Mr. Bratt obtained a bachelor’s degree from New York University in 2002.

During his law career, Mr. Bratt has garnered considerable recognition. In 2014, the National Trial Lawyers ranked him among the country’s Top 100 trial lawyers and listed him as one of the Top 40 Under 40 attorneys. In 2015, Super Lawyer magazine named him a Southern California Rising Star and placed him on its list of Top 100 Up-and-Coming Attorneys of Southern California. He has been named a Southern California Rising Star every year since 2015. Mr. Bratt was recently recognized as a 2018 Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles Trial Lawyer of the Year nominee.

Mr. Bratt enjoys travel, sports events, live music, cooking and fine dining.

Patti L. Burshtyn

NEW YORK OFFICE

“The personal relationships I develop with my clients are the most satisfying aspect of my work. Even though it’s heartbreaking to work with cancer victims — most of whom are very sick and will at some point pass away — it’s my responsibility to help them because this is their time of true need. They were only doing their jobs, yet they fell prey to one of the asbestos cancers — and it happened because irresponsible companies chose to gamble with their health. They won’t get back their health, but as their attorney I can help give them peace of mind in knowing that their families will be financially secure. And I’m glad that I can make the process of suing less intimidating. Being able to make people’s lives a little better at a terrible time, that’s the aspect of being a lawyer that makes me most proud.”

Overview

Patti L. Burshtyn serves as an associate attorney in our Asbestos Litigation group. She was welcomed to the firm in 2001, after spending two terms as a clerk in the chambers of New Jersey Superior Court Judge Donald S. Goldman, where, in addition to mediating civil disputes, she also researched and wrote memoranda touching upon civil and criminal matters (contracts, insurance, personal injury, and constitutional rights), ensured that motions complied with court rules, and made disposition recommendations on substantive issues of law.

At Weitz & Luxenberg, Ms. Burshtyn has to date helped win for asbestos-exposure victims a combined total of $62 million in verdicts (in one case alone, $37 million on behalf of a boilermaker’s widow and a steamfitter’s daughter; in another, $25 million on behalf of a brake repairman). She also has helped secure substantial sums in settlement of a number of other cases (most recently, on behalf of 12 mesothelioma victims suing 50 companies).

A member of the American Bar Assn. and the New York Bar Assn., Ms. Burshtyn is admitted to practice law in the states of New York and New Jersey, privileges she has enjoyed since 2000. Ms. Burstyn received a juris doctor degree from Fordham University School of Law in 1999. During her time there, she was a member of Fordham Law Women and the Phi Alpha Delta International Law Fraternity, participated in the William Hughes Mulligan Moot Court Competition, and served on the staff of the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal. Ms. Burshtyn is a 1996 magna cum laude graduate of State University of New York, Albany, where she majored in political science.
