“I represent people who have been injured as a result of asbestos exposure. I also represent their families because the injury usually extends to them as well. My goal is to see to it that the companies responsible for causing asbestos exposure injuries are held accountable. To me, nothing is more rewarding than bringing about that accountability. Working at Weitz & Luxenberg, a law firm that truly understands what it takes to win, makes success in the quest for accountability possible.”

Overview

Weitz & Luxenberg attorneys possess a remarkably intimate familiarity with the law. With Brandi C. Chaplin, that familiarity was gained in part by serving as a clerk for Pennsylvania judges during the two years immediately prior to her joining our firm. First, she was a judicial fellow in the chambers of the Hon. Charles Hayden, who presides over civil and criminal cases in Philadelphia Municipal Court. Ms. Chaplin’s role called upon her to draft briefs concerning the applicability of the state’s rules of civil procedure to matters being heard by Judge Hayden. She also drafted court opinions where modification of the written agreement was sought so it would then accurately reflect the actual intent of the signatories.

Later, Ms. Chaplin became the senior law clerk for the Hon. Karen Shreeves-Johns in Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas. In this capacity, Ms. Chaplin conducted extensive legal research to develop and write opinions requested by Judge Shreeves-Johns to help the jurist decide pre-trial motions in major civil jury trials. In a similar vein, Ms. Chaplin also drafted opinions concerning criminal cases where convicted defendants were appealing their sentencing.

In her work today as a Weitz & Luxenberg attorney, Ms. Chaplin writes and responds to motions filed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey courts at both the state and federal levels. She also writes appellate briefs.  Ms. Chaplin leads a team dedicated to ensuring timely completion and filing of motions in each case handled by the Cherry Hill office. She oversees investigations into potential claims by our clients and conducting depositions.

Ms. Chaplin is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She holds a juris doctor degree received in 2012 from Widener University School of Law. While attending that Wilmington, Delaware, school, Ms. Chaplin held the position of Black Law Students Association vice president and was a staff member on two scholarly publications – Widener Journal of Law and Economics and Race. She also was a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Society, worked as a legal intern at the law school’s Veterans Law Clinic, assisted an entertainment attorney, and interned as a law clerk for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Bankruptcy Division. In 2007, Ms. Chaplin graduated from Widener University with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and minors in sociology and Spanish.

“I’m so happy to be back at Weitz & Luxenberg. Before law school, I had the opportunity to work at W&L and become familiar with the important work our firm does to help good, decent, hard-working people whose quality of life was taken away by exposure to asbestos. These large corporations knew they were putting people’s health at risk, but they didn’t care because money was more important to them than the value of human life. These companies need to be held accountable for their actions. I am dedicated to helping clients and their families seek justice in this difficult time.”

Overview

Courtney Chlebina is an associate attorney in the firm’s Mesothelioma and Asbestos Litigation group. Prior to joining the Weitz & Luxenberg team, Ms. Chlebina was an assistant public defender with the Defender Association of Philadelphia in its Felony Waiver Unit, providing representation to those accused of crimes who cannot afford to hire an attorney.

Courtroom and Trial Experience

While at the Defenders, she gained extensive courtroom and trial advocacy experience, conducting over 100 bench trials in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and Municipal Court. She also conducted countless other legal proceedings, many of which involved detailed negotiations with the prosecutor’s office. These critical trial and negotiation skills provide Ms. Chlebina with a unique perspective, allowing her to strategically seek the best outcomes for her clients.

Ms. Chlebina gained experience with appellate work during her internship with the Capital Habeas Unit of the Federal Community Defender Office in Philadelphia. There, she was tasked with reviewing case files, researching and writing legal claims, visiting clients on death row, and assisting in the preparation for appellate arguments and evidentiary hearings. In 2016, Ms. Chlebina was awarded the Judge William M. Marutani Fellowship for public interest work.

Longtime Interest in Law

Before law school, Ms. Chlebina worked in the Cherry Hill office of W&L, serving as the unit’s discovery team supervisor and paralegal. She oversaw discovery for the firm’s asbestos cases.

For over 8 years, first in high school and then as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, Ms. Chlebina participated in numerous mock trial programs and competitions. In law school, Ms. Chlebina was a member of Temple’s Trial Team. For two years in a row, she won the Regional Trial Competition in Philadelphia and went on to compete in the National Trial Competition in Texas.

Earning her Juris Doctor from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, Ms. Chlebina was a staff editor on the Temple Law Review and served as President of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. She volunteered as an advocate for the School Discipline Advocacy Service and served on their board.

On the Personal Side

Outside of work, Ms. Chlebina enjoys traveling, skiing, experiencing new cultures and food, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Nancy Christensen

“When tragedies occur due to the irresponsible practices of corporations, Weitz & Luxenberg is there to help the victims, whether the crisis happens on a national scale or in a small community.  Working alongside dedicated and creative attorneys is an honor, and I appreciate being a part of our team’s efforts to make things right for those who have suffered terrible hardships through no fault of their own.”

Overview

Nancy Christensen joined Weitz & Luxenberg’s Environmental, Toxic Torts, and Consumer Protection litigation unit as an associate attorney in 2016. With more than a decade of consumer advocacy and specialized environmental litigation experience, she is indispensable in our efforts to hold irresponsible corporations accountable.

Most recently, Ms. Christensen has teamed up with our attorneys in targeting firefighting foam manufacturers charged with contaminating water supplies in the communities of Bucks and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania. The firefighting foam contains the toxic chemicals perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), which have been used on military bases for decades. The mishandling of these poisonous agents has jeopardized the lives of thousands of businesses and residents and devalued homes.

Ms. Christensen also has assisted our attorneys in seeking justice for victims of the Flint Water Crisis. In addition, she is representing a city in Oklahoma that is trying to protect its public water supply from contamination emanating from a former manufacturing facility.

Prior to joining our firm, Ms. Christensen served three years as assistant attorney general in the New York State Office of the Attorney General in the Environmental Protection Bureau, Toxics and Cost Recovery section. One of her primary responsibilities was managing cases involving the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), sometimes called Superfund. CERCLA was enacted in 1980 to correct egregious acts of hazardous waste mismanagement committed by large corporations.

In addition to recovering millions of dollars in state cleanup funds, she also handled enforcement matters, including an investigation into children’s products being offered for sale in New York that contained dangerous levels of lead.  As a result of the investigation’s findings, one company issued a nationwide recall for three of its products.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Christensen served in the environmental practice group at a large international law firm, where she represented clients in a number of matters involving environmental laws and complex regulatory issues. This included cases where clients sought to recover cleanup costs from the United States for its share of contribution to contamination at Department of Defense contractor sites.

One such case, brought in the Central District of California, was for cleanup costs associated with hazardous chemical contamination linked to a manufacturing facility in California that made missiles for the Army and Navy decades earlier.

Ms. Christensen is licensed to practice law in New York and New Jersey. She is also approved to practice in the U.S. District of New Jersey and the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York.

Ms. Christensen graduated with a juris doctorate degree from the Columbia School of Law in New York City in 2003. Her honors include being named a Charles Evans Hughes Fellow, Susan Price Carr Scholar, and Human Rights Fellow.

She earned undergraduate degrees in the arts and journalism in 1999 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Ms. Christensen’s majors included news-editorial, English, and women’s studies.

One of Ms. Christensen’s passions is helping victims of domestic violence navigate the legal system. Pro bono, she has represented clients of Sanctuary for Families’ Center for Battered Women’s Legal Services, helping them obtain orders of protection and assisting them in disputes involving child support and custody. During law school, she helped the organization run its Courtroom Advocates Project (CAP) at Columbia, which enables law school students and law firm associates to advocate for domestic violence victims entering family court to obtain orders of protectionenabled law school students to advocate for domestic violence victims entering family court to obtain orders of protection.  In 2009, Sanctuary for Families honored her with its Above & Beyond Pro Bono achievement award.
