“My favorite part about working at Weitz & Luxenberg is helping people and getting to know our clients and their families. These relationships are everything. Our clients become like family to me. I can’t undo the damage that has been done, but I want to do everything I can legally to achieve the best possible outcome for them. Even after their case is resolved, I like to stay in touch.”

Overview

Alex Eiden has been an associate attorney in the Mesothelioma and Asbestos Practice Group litigation unit in the firm’s Cherry Hill office in New Jersey, since 2012. He came to us from a law office in Wilmington, Delaware, where he began working shortly after graduating from law school.

A knowledgeable and experienced attorney, Mr. Eiden handles cases for three jurisdictions: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

“At Weitz & Luxenberg, I get to work with some of the best attorneys in the world. And being part of Weitz & Luxenberg’s efforts to help our clients and their families is an honor. I am extremely grateful to have access to the very best resources. Our clients deserve no less.

“They’re salt of the earth, humble, hard-working people. They’ve devoted their lives to their families and worked hard all of their lives. The companies that intentionally disregarded their safety by exposing them to asbestos should not get away with it,” Mr. Eiden insists.

Asbestos Causes Mesothelioma and Other Cancer

W&L shares Mr. Eiden’s drive to help people injured by asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a known carcinogen. Being exposed to asbestos can lead to a variety of diseases, including mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer that often targets the lungs. There are treatments, but the disease is always fatal.

W&L attorneys founded this firm more than 30 years ago to help our clients who developed severe asbestos-exposure illnesses. As long as there are companies that choose to put profits before people, we will continue to fight on our clients’ behalf.

People’s Lives Are More Important Than Money

“The companies that have exposed people to asbestos keep repeating the same narrative,” Mr. Eiden explains. “They’ve dug themselves in so deep they have to keep repeating the lie — that what they’re doing is okay.

“But it’s not,” Mr. Eiden says. “Time and time again, they have put money over human life. That is unconscionable. At Weitz & Luxenberg, we intend to send a clear message that if companies knowingly endanger people’s lives, they will not get away with it.”

My Clients Are Like Family

“I think of myself as a person first and a lawyer second,” Mr. Eiden says. “When I go to meet with a client, I walk in the door as a real person who can relate to what they’re going through.

“I know what cancer can do to someone. The treatments involved. How cancer affects both the person with the diagnosis and all the family members. I hope the clients I meet with see me as someone who is authentic, someone who really cares about what they’re going through.

“Being able to explain how the legal process works is important. Sometimes our clients have never even heard of mesothelioma, and they’re trying to understand what they’re facing and how this diagnosis happened. But everything begins with gaining a client’s trust — letting them know I understand, that I’m there for them throughout the process.

“They become like family and friends to me. Even when a case seems to be coming close to a resolution, I like to check in with my clients to see how they’re doing,” Mr. Eiden adds. “To me, the process is personal, and I want to help them both legally and as a person who really cares about them.”

Alex Eiden can be reached directly by email at AEiden@weitzlux.com.

LOS ANGELES OFFICE
1880 Century Park East, Suite 700

“In every aspect, of every case, with every client — I focus on treating those that entrust us with their most sensitive matters to that of how I would my own family. Everything we strive for — it’s all about our clients. They are good people who find themselves in extremely difficult situations and fighting for justice for them is the most rewarding part of my job.”

Overview

Brandon DuPree is an associate attorney who joined our Los Angeles, California asbestos team in 2016. After admission to the California Bar, he became one of our asbestos litigators.

“From the very beginning, I sensed that working at Weitz & Luxenberg was a great fit,” says Mr. DuPree. “I have had the opportunity to learn so much from our attorneys and brilliant co-workers — to see from the ground up what goes into building a successful case. I am incredibly privileged to work with such a talented and dedicated group of people.”

It’s All About Our Clients

“Everything we do, everything we strive for — it’s all about our clients. They are good people in who find themselves in extremely difficult situations and fighting for justice for them is the most rewarding part of my job,” explains Mr. DuPree.

Betrayed by Those They Trusted

“At the Office of the State Attorney in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, I worked with the corruption unit, which handled white-collar crimes and public official misconduct.” Mr. DuPree points out, “Asbestos litigation is actually not all that different.”

“Our clients are honest people who were just trying to earn a living for themselves and their families.” Mr. DuPree continues, “The corporations that made and sold toxic asbestos-containing products are some of the largest in the U.S. and in the world. They knew asbestos was dangerous and did not warn people. They betrayed the public’s trust in the worst ways possible, profiting off the backs of hardworking men and women.”

He emphasizes, “I’m honored to be part of Weitz & Luxenberg’s efforts to stand up to the large, powerful, seemingly untouchable companies — whose actions have so egregiously and grievously changed countless lives forever.”

Success Depends on Building the Case Right

Mr. DuPree has assisted on cases resulting in multimillion dollar verdicts on behalf of injured clients.

“Whether that final achievement is through a settlement or a jury verdict, there is an incredible amount of work and preparation involved in these kind of trial cases,” he explains. “There’s a huge sense of accomplishment knowing we’ve fought for and achieved the best possible outcome for our clients and their families.”

Prior Legal Experience

Before Mr. DuPree’s associate attorney role with W&L, he served as a head bankruptcy law clerk for consecutive years with a law corporation based out of Irvine, California. During his tenure, he simultaneously managed multiple deadline-oriented client portfolios for high profile cases.

At the start of Mr. DuPree’s law career, he gained experience as a legal intern for the Office of the State Attorney in Fort Lauderdale. His responsibilities included preparing motions, and evaluating and researching extensive case documents related to investigations of white-collar crimes and official misconduct.

He was responsible for attending depositions and court proceedings to ensure well-prepared case status summaries. This experience ensured a thorough review of police reports, video evidence, and other related discoveries, to gain valuable insight on how trial cases are developed and proceeded.

Mr. DuPree is licensed to practice law in California.

On the Personal Side

Born in Dallas, Texas and raised in South Florida, Mr. DuPree enjoys weekends spent around the dinner table or fire pit laughing with family and friends. He also loves sports, traveling, and exploring national parks with his fiancée.

Michael Fanelli

NEW YORK OFFICE
700 Broadway
New York, NY 10003

“Our clients worked their entire lives supporting their families. They looked forward to their Golden Years. Corporate greed and irresponsibility took that away from them. I work tirelessly to ensure that our clients do not have to worry about the financial hardships and burdens that come along with a diagnosis of mesothelioma or lung cancer.”

Overview

Michael Fanelli handles cases as a member of our Asbestos Litigation group and carries the designation of associate attorney. In 2011, as co-chair of a lawsuit against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Goodyear Canada, he helped hold those two defendants responsible for causing a steamfitter and a heavy-equipment engine mechanic to suffer harm from asbestos exposure (the jury decided the companies should pay the two plaintiffs a combined total of $22 million, making theirs the year’s 86th highest damage award in the U.S.).

More recently, in 2014, Mr. Fanelli played a direct role in securing a hard-won $12.5-million verdict for the deserving families of three New York area workers stricken by mesothelioma — an electrician, a steamfitter, and an insulator who each were exposed to asbestos on the job. The defendants tried every trick in the book to sway the jury to their side, but to no avail against the powerful, well-organized case Mr. Fanelli helped deliver.

Mr. Fanelli has been listed by Super Lawyers magazine as a “Rising Star” among New York’s cadre of elite attorneys. Mr. Fanelli began the practice of law in 2004 with his admission to the bars of two states — New York and New Jersey — and spent the next five years as a Bronx County, N.Y., assistant district attorney. In that capacity, Mr. Fanelli handled over 500 felony cases.

Mr. Fanelli’s legal skills first took shape at New York Law School, which conferred upon him in 2004 a juris doctor degree, summa cum laude. During his time there, Mr. Fanelli academically distinguished himself by winning the Dean’s Scholarship, being named a John Marshall Harlan Scholar, repeatedly making it onto the Dean’s List (including the special subset list of high honors achievers), and serving on the New York Law School Law Review (first as a staff member and, later, as an associate editor). Entrance to New York Law School followed his 2001 graduation from Fordham University, where he received a bachelor degree in political science along with the recognition of having been named to the dean’s list.

Mark Feine is a client liaison at Weitz & Luxenberg. As a client liaison, Mark’s work involves meeting one-on-one with new clients at the outset of a case to discuss their history of asbestos exposure and gather information.

Overview

Mark is also the firm’s dedicated veteran liaison. After a distinguished military career as a machinist mate chief aboard Navy submarines for 20 years, Mark retired in 1996 to pursue work helping other veterans who were exposed to asbestos — often during their service aboard submarines and other military installations.

Mark’s commitment to helping veterans runs deep — he himself was exposed to asbestos during his tenure as a naval mechanic. Today, he works with men and women across the country to help them understand their own asbestos exposure and start them down the path of filing an asbestos lawsuit.

In a typical case, Mark will call to set up an appointment with the new client. This meeting is an exchange of ideas, with the new client explaining his or her case, and Mark detailing ways in which Weitz & Luxenberg will be able to help. At the end of the meeting, Mark will match the new client with an attorney who can guide their case through to completion.

Mark is stationed in St. Marys, Georgia, where he lives with his wife and raised two daughters. He serves veterans across the country and in Canada.
